How to Read Labels: Hidden sugar in the Ingredients List

When Nutrition Information Panel is not available, the next best thing to do to know whether the product is sweet, is to read the Ingredients List.


There are ingredients that contributes to the sugar content. However, there are some ingredients that we didn't know contributes to the sugar content.

Here are some known ingredients that contributes to the Sugar content:

  • White Sugar

  • Brown Sugar

  • Cane Sugar

  • Raw Sugar

  • Icing Sugar

  • Palm Sugar/ Gula Melaka

  • Honey

  • High Fructose Syrup

  • Corn Syrup

  • Maple Syrup

  • Golden Syrup

The scientific name that contributes to the sugar content:

  • Sucrose (another name for Sugar)

  • Fructose (sugar from fruits)

  • Lactose (sugar from dairy)

  • Dextrose

  • Maltose

  • Glucose

Hidden sugars:

  • Fruit Juice Concentrate

  • Malt

  • Treacle

  • Molasses

  • Cordials


It is best to read the Ingredients List and Nutrition Information Labels to make informed choices.
