How to read Labels: Introduction to Ingredients List

Ingredients list

Ingredients List must be printed on every prepacked food's label. It is a complete list of all the ingredients used in the product. It includes additives and ingredients that could cause hypersensitivity. This is to help those with allergies or food intolerances to understand what is in the food product and whether it is product that they can consume (i.e. whether it contains ingredients that might cause allergic reactions.

Ingredients list is listed in descending order based on the weight of the ingredients used in the food product.

Sometimes Food Manufacturers will declare on the food labels that they may contain allergens by including the phrases like:

  • 'contains ____', 'may contain ____'

  • 'made in a facility that processes ___'

How to Read Labels: Things Food Manufacturers don't want to tell you

There are some hidden secrets that most people don't know. Here are some common ones that you need to know about labels.

ree
Read labels

  • Serving Sizes stated on the packages are not a recommendation of how much you should eat or drink. They are determined by the Food Manufacturers.

  • Some Food Manufacturers will use salt in the Nutrition labels instead of sodium, so read the label carefully. Most of the time, it is to hide the fact that the product is high in sodium. A lower amount would trick you into believing that it is low in sodium. To help you convert the amount of salt back to sodium, please use the converter.

  • Claims are just advertisements. Some claims are regulated while other claims are not. Claims doesn't help you much in determining whether it is a healthy product or not. You would still need to read the Nutrition Labels.

How to Read Labels: EU Nutrition Labels

In Singapore and Malaysia, we use EU Nutrition Labels for our local Food products.

NIP

When you want to compare a similar product with the similar Nutrition label, we use the Per 100g column. To compare which product is higher in protein, you should be looking at the amount of protein per 100g for both products.

Sometimes when we import food products from Australia, New Zealand and UK, the energy unit used is kilojoules (kJ). To convert it back to kcal, you are to calculate as follows:

kcal = ___ kJ divided by 4.2

For Serving Size, please note that the amount is dictated by the manufacturers. It does not mean that you should be consuming that amount. Rather you should be consuming based on what you should be eating in accordance to your physical activity level and what you need.
