How to Read Food Labels: Hidden Sodium in Ingredients List

When Nutrition Information Panel is not available, the next best thing to do to know whether the product is high in salt, is to read the Ingredients List.


There are ingredients that contributes to the sodium content. However, there are some ingredients that we didn't know contributes to the sodium intake.

Here are some known ingredients that contributes to the Sodium content:

  • Rock Salt

  • Sea Salt

  • Soya Sauce

Here are some ingredients that contains sodium:

  • Stock powder e.g. chicken powder

  • Oyster Sauce

  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) or E621

  • Sodium Nitrate

  • Sodium Guanylate

  • Baking Powder

  • Sodium Inosinate

  • Sodium Bicarbonate OR Baking Soda
