Adequate:

It should provide enough essential nutrients to prevent deficiencies and promote health while not taking excess.


Balanced:

Energy intakes should be balanced with energy requirements which vary with age, gender, physical activity levels. The body requires enough energy available for:

  • Immune system

  • Cardiovascular function

  • Reproductive system

  • Blood and bone marrow function

  • Brain and nerve function, etc.

There are signs and risk factors that you should look out for when you suspect you don't have sufficient energy intakes.


Moderate:

Certain food should be consumed in moderation as they have nutrients that if consumed in excess can be associated with negative health effects.


Diverse:

A wide variety of nutritious foods within and across food groups to help with nutrient adequacy and include other health promoting substances in the diet.
